Abstract:
This paper offers a comprehensive examination of the impact of social media on mental health. Drawing upon an extensive review of literature, this study explores the psychological effects of social media usage and identifies factors that may mitigate or exacerbate these impacts.
The introduction delves into the prevalent usage of social media platforms among individuals worldwide and highlights the potential detrimental consequences they might pose to mental health. It is argued that while social media offers numerous benefits like connectivity and information sharing, it also triggers concerns over addiction, cyberbullying, privacy issues, and exposure to unrealistic standards.
Subsequent sections outline key findings from various studies on topics such as anxiety, depression, self-esteem, loneliness, and sleep patterns associated with social media use. A psychological perspective emphasizes the role of social media in facilitating these mental health challenges through mechanisms like social comparison, fear of missing out FOMO, cyberbullying experiences, and online harassment.
Moreover, this paper discusses moderating factors that can influence the relationship between social media usage and mental wellbeing. This includes individual personality trts, such as neuroticism, and protective behaviors adopted by users like limiting screen time or setting boundaries with social media use.
The underscores the critical need for public health initiatives med at educating individuals about the potential negative effects of social media on their mental health while promoting healthy usage habits. It advocates for balanced digital literacy programs that foster responsible engagement online.
